What to eat on Bonfire Night

Fireworks are often only part of the evening. Food stalls, hot drinks and warming snacks are a feature of many displays, and a little planning can make a cold outdoor event more comfortable.

Traditional Bonfire Night food in Britain includes jacket potatoes, sausages, soup, toffee apples and treacle toffee. These are seasonal favourites rather than foods that are uniquely Welsh. If you want to give your celebration a Welsh flavour, there are plenty of local options to try.

  • Welsh cakes: Easy to serve with a hot drink, Welsh cakes are a practical choice for sharing before heading out. Explore Tan Y Castell Bakery and other Welsh food producers.

  • Bara brith: This fruit loaf works well sliced and packed for a family gathering. Find more ideas in our guide to traditional Welsh food.

  • Cawl: A bowl of this traditional Welsh soup is a warming option before an evening outdoors. Make it at home or look for a local café serving seasonal dishes.

  • Welsh rarebit: A savoury choice for an early supper, particularly if you are staying in before watching fireworks nearby.

  • Local sausages and baked potatoes: These are familiar Bonfire Night foods that can be made with Welsh produce. Check farm shops and local food businesses for ingredients, including those listed in our Welsh food products guide.

If you are buying food at a display, check the event information for the stalls available. Some organisers publish a list of traders, while others confirm food arrangements closer to the date. Taking a reusable cup or flask may also be useful, provided the venue allows it.

You can discover more independent Welsh food businesses through the Local Welsh Food producer directory.

Before you go

  • Check the date and time. Some displays take place before or after November 5, and weather can affect outdoor events.

  • Book ahead where required. Larger displays may sell out, and some do not sell tickets at the gate.

  • Plan your journey. Expect busy roads and limited parking near popular venues. Some events have road closures or recommend walking from town car parks.

  • Dress for the weather. Bring warm, waterproof clothing and suitable footwear for beaches, parks and open fields.

  • Check accessibility and restrictions. Confirm arrangements for accessible viewing, dogs, sparklers and personal fireworks directly with the organiser.
